Armac were appointed as Contractor for this large and complex project by Volker Fitzpatrick. The project scope was the preconstruction required as well as the complete demolition of the iconic ‘Wembley Way’ pedestrian footbridge.

Key Points

  • Working within close proximity to pedestrianised areas adjacent to the Pedway which remained open despite a national lockdown

  • Ensuring robust management of logistics including deliveries and waste removal of the 4,500 tonnes of concrete and steel.

  • Management of a COVID-19-compliant site and restrictive noise, vibration and dust monitoring when working in a residential area.

  • Provision of a company-owned and maintained fleet of demolition-specific excavators unrivalled within our industry; and a team of experienced bridge busters.

  • The pedway structure was demolished with only 2 meters of clearance to the new structure. This necessitated an Armac level of precision to delicately work alongside the new structure.

  • Excelled the tight programme time, delivering the project 3 days ahead of the scheduled 14 days.

The successful and safe completion of this project was achieved due to the thorough pre-planning phase of Contract Director Noel McLean, Operations Director Adrian McLean, and Project Engineer Robert Dudley, who provided Volker Fitzpatrick with technically relevant expertise.

Armac’s expertise were essential due to the complexity and age of the structure. Several drop-in sections sat on top of half joints meaning technical calculations of the bridges’ capacity were required. Thanks to rigorous floor load testing and trial holes, the team were able to smoothly bring these beams to a point of failure, in a controlled and safe manner.

To execute the remainder of the demolition, a team of experienced operators led by Noel McLean utilized two of the UK's first 352 demolition excavators to tackle the Pedway, supported by eight additional excavators fitted with specialist attachments chosen specifically for their effectiveness. This demolition-specific fleet of all Armac-owned and maintained excavators puts Armac in a unique position of contractors who can deliver the firepower required for accelerated programmes. Once enough space was created, a CAT 374 was deployed to solely demolish the larger entrance span. The remaining excavators worked with a crane-mounted debris screen to remove the smaller span flanked by the new Wembley residential development.

Armacs thorough planning, experienced operatives and industry-leading fleet resulted in the project being completed 3 days ahead of the scheduled 14 days. This aided our client greatly who faced a tight programme to complete the ‘Olympic Way’ structure in time for the 2020 Carabao cup final.

Logistics investigations at the start of the project to assess the risks and minimize the disruption to the surrounding area. The location of the stadium near some of the capital's most expensive residential properties, with some just meters from the site hoarding, required strict control of noise, vibration, and dust. Armac utilized monitoring equipment to capture pre-start baseline readings and monitor the project until completion. This equipment provided real-time readings and alerts if any pre-agreed levels were exceeded the site team worked to mitigate any potential issues quickly.

Teamwork was essential in completing the project efficiently, with dozens of trucks arriving every hour to haul away the 4,500 tonnes of concrete and steel from the downed Pedway. Every member of the team knew their role, directing and encouraging their teammates throughout the eight-day project to facilitate the installation of the new staircase ahead of the Carabao Cup Final.

As a business we are very proud to have played such a huge part in the re-development of the stadium, we maintained a proactive approach throughout which was clearly demonstrated in the results, we received praise from Volker Fitzpatrick and the locally based residents and businesses on our professional attitude and willingness for project success. We are confident that this project clearly demonstrates our capabilities on high-profile projects that require a team of skilled, technically minded and driven individuals
